What Every Homeowner Should Know Before Voting
Ballots were sent electronically on July 9th. Here's what's at stake.
Two open seats, two incumbents running: Madonna Treadway and Rene Lopez, both long-serving Board members, are up for re-election.
A third candidate has an undisclosed affiliation. Nancy Chase, a member of the rental cap committee, has entered the race. Her candidacy statement does not mention her involvement with or advocacy for the rental cap committee. Two other rental cap committee members - Lorie Taylor and Louise Wesley - currently sit on the Board.
Why this matters: If elected, Ms. Chase would give rental cap committee members a majority of Board seats. That majority could pursue a CCR amendment establishing a rental cap - a legal process that would require attorney fees, an amendment vote, and likely increased dues to cover the cost.
Our concern: Laurel Bay operates as a "working Board," where members take on hands-on responsibility for reserves, insurance, and building maintenance. We believe Board seats should go to homeowners who represent the interests of the whole community - not push a specific policy agenda.
What to do: Read all candidate statements carefully. Please VOTE and return your ballot before August 12.
The Candidates
Madonna Treadway
Board vice-president for 6 years. Decades of national real estate asset and client management experience. MBA. Former business finance professor at the university level. She has worked hard to protect our property value, to make good decisions regarding improvement projects, to maintain reserve funds, while also working effectively with property management.
Our group endorses Madonna's reelection.
Rene Lopez
Board member for 6 years.
At the July 8 Board meeting, Rene was the deciding vote against a community-wide survey that would have given every homeowner a voice in setting the Board's priorities, including whether a rental cap should be pursued alongside other important issues such as maintenance and financial planning.
With the rental cap dividing our community, this survey could have provided clear guidance from the owners the Board represents.
Nancy Chase
Member of the rental cap committee (not disclosed in her candidate statement). She has lived in LB for ten years but has no prior involvement or volunteering at LB.
A former political lobbyist. She served on a political committee for mayor Todd Gloria. Her clients: ousted San Diego mayor Bob Filner, former San Diego mayor and conservative talk show host Roger Hedgecock.
Our group does NOT endorse Nancy's election.
We recommend placing all votes for Madonna Treadway.
